That's us. Those of us in or just about to hit 20s. So new that we don't really have a name yet. Undergoing so many changes that they don't know what to predict for us. And because we're the product of the baby boomers, there's just so darn many of us.
The other day I heard someone call this new generation the "Echo" generation, as in the echos of the baby boom. However, I see that someone else - a news article - call us the "Y" generation. Now I don't know about you but personally I like being the Echoes better. Being known as just the generation to come after X is meaningless; being described as the product of something big however, that's something more powerful.
Scary isn't it?

12 Food Cures Revealed
A sound diet is your most important tool for warding off - and recovering from - common ailments. Incorporating any of these food cures into your diet will yield benefits only if you're already eating a variety of healthy foods. The advice given here is not meant to replace medical attention.
Active ingredient: Theobromine
What it does: Theobromine suppresses activity in the vagus nerve, which causes coughing. According to a study published in a recent issue of The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology journal, it was one-third more effective at stopping a persistent cough than a placebo.
Suggested serving size: One 50-gram bar of dark chocolate or two cups (500 mL) of hot cocoa (made with real cocoa, not hot chocolate mix) per day.
Active ingredient: Allicin
What it does: Allicin boosts the immune system and kills off viral and bacterial infections, says Peter Josling, clinical director of the Herbal Research Center in East Sussex, England.
Suggested serving size: Four cloves, two times a week during cold season. You'll get more allicin from raw garlic, so try mashing it on whole wheat bread, pasta or salad.
Active ingredient: Potassium
What it does: Coconut water hydrates better than a sports drink. It's also high in potassium, which helps replenish electrolytes (natural salt substances that maintain cell function) lost through diarrhea.
Suggested serving size: Up to two cups (500 mL) of coconut water (it's now available in cartons) per day until diarrhea stops.
Active ingredient: Bacteria
What it does: Eating plain unsweetened yogurt promotes the growth of good bacteria in the vagina. Yogurt is also slightly acidic, which adjusts vaginal pH to kill yeast.
Suggested serving size: One cup (250 mL) per day until infection clears. After that, eat at least one cup (250 mL) of yogurt two to three times per week to maintain healthy bacteria levels.
Active ingredient: Lycopene
What it does: The juicy fruit contains almost 40 per cent more skin-soothing lycopene than raw tomatoes. According to Massimo Marcone, a food science professor at the University of Guelph in Ontario, this antioxidant protects skin from oxygen damage, which weakens the skin's outer layer and makes it easier for acne-causing bacteria to invade.
Suggested serving size: One cup (250 mL) of fresh mushed watermelon per day.
Active ingredient: Vitamin C
What they do: Vitamin C boosts collagen production, which keeps skin moisturized and helps reduce wrinkles. This powerful antioxidant also stabilizes the skin surrounding blood vessels, which Toronto dermatologist Paul Cohen says may reduce blushing.
Suggested serving size: 1/4 cup (50 mL) per day of chopped raw peppers (cooking reduces vitamin C content).
Active ingredients: Calcium and vitamin D
What it does: A study published last year in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that women who had diets high in calcium and vitamin D (1200 mg of calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D daily) experienced less severe PMS symptoms. Researchers suggest that decreased levels of estrogen during the latter half of the menstrual cycle may interfere with the absorption of both nutrients, but they're unsure why this might trigger PMS.
Suggested serving size: Four cups (250 mL each) of skim milk or fortified soy milk per day. Substitute a 1/2-cup (125-mL) serving of a yogurt containing both calcium and vitamin D (such as Source by Yoplait) for one to two milk servings. If you're sensitive to dairy, try a calcium and vitamin D supplement.
Active ingredients: Zinc, protein
What they do: Like vitamin C, zinc supports collagen production, which strengthens skin and blood vessels.
Suggested serving size: 1/4 cup (50 mL) of roasted or raw seeds per day until the cut is healed.
Active ingredient: Selenium
What they do: This variety of mushrooms is especially packed with selenium, a mineral that protects your eggs - and uterine cells - from damaging free radicals.
Suggested serving size: Two to 2 1/2 cups (500 to 625 mL) of cooked mushrooms three times a week until you conceive. Cooking shrinks the mushrooms but doesn't compromise the nutrition, says Marcone. It also packs more selenium into each serving.
Active ingredient: Peppermint
What it does: Peppermint soothes the digestive tract and relaxes muscles to encourage flatulence, says Brenda Arychuk, an Edmonton-based registered dietitian. The tea also eases indigestion and speeds up the passage of food by improving the flow of bile - necessary for fat digestion.
Suggested serving size: One cup (250 mL) or more of peppermint tea, whenever you feel bloated or gassy. Steer clear of this remedy if you have gastroesophageal reflux disease. Peppermint can worsen symptoms such as heartburn and indigestion by relaxing the system so much that stomach acid flows back up the esophagus.
Active ingredient: Fibre
What they do: Black beans are a great source of soluble fibre - a half cup (125 mL) contains 6.4 grams, an amount that Vancouver-based registered dietitian Heather McColl recommends you eat every day. How does this help? Soluble fibre eases constipation by softening stool, making it easier to pass. It also adds bulk to the colon - thickening things up to avoid diarrhea.
Suggested serving size: One cup (250 mL) of canned black beans per day until you're back to normal.
Active ingredients: Calcium and vitamin K
What it does: Kale is a good source of both calcium and vitamin K. Just a half cup (125 mL) of the chopped leafy green covers your daily recommended intake of vitamin K - essential in producing the proteins needed to create strong bones. Calcium further bolsters bone strength to speed healing and prevent future fractures
Suggested serving size: A half cup (125 mL) of chopped, cooked kale per day until break heals. Too bitter for you? Try adding kale to other foods such as pasta sauce, salad or soup. And choose a bunch with smaller leaves - they have a milder flavour.

New House, New Leaf
In anticipation of moving into a new place tomorrow, I dug up some old files that I had saved a while back on DIY cleaning solutions. So many of the cleaning products that we use every day - even some labeled "green" and "safe" - are harmful to our bodies and the environment. So for the upcoming year, I have resolved to use as much homemade cleaners as I can. Interested? Here's something to get you started:
All-Purpose Cleaner:
(Suggested uses: Hard surfaces like countertops and kitchen floors, windows, and mirrors)
2 cups white distilled vinegar
2 cups water
20–30 or more drops of essential oil (optional)
Tip: For tough jobs, microwave in a glass container until barely hot.
Creamy Soft Scrub:
(Suggested use: Bathroom shower)
2 cups baking soda
1/2 cup liquid castile soap (made from vegetable oil, not animal fat)
4 teaspoons vegetable glycerin (acts as a perservative)
5 drops antibacterial essential oil, such as lavender, tea tree, rosemary or any preferred scent (optional)
Furniture Polish:
(Suggested use: Wood such as piano)
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup white distilled vinegar
20–30 drops lemon essential oil
Shake well before using

Another One, Because I'm Cool Like That
You're trapped in a room for 3 days with your ex, what do you do?
Play a lot of board games?
You're stuck on an elevator with the person you've fallen the hardest for, what happens?
Hmm I'd rather not say ;)
The celebrity you love the most offers to marry you, as long as you don't talk to any of your current friends or family members anymore. Do you marry them?
Only after they apologize profusely for even suggesting something like that and do something fabulous to make it up to each and every single one of them.
Your best friend of the opposite sex likes you, what do you do?
Talk to them about it.
If you ever want live to see another day, you're forced to snort cocaine. Do you do it?
When faced with the choice between getting high once or death, I think most people would choose to get high.
If you woke up in one of the Saw movies, do you think you could survive?
Umm no. I don't think I'd even try.
When is the last time you were in a photobooth taking pictures with friend?
Ahh so long ago.
Who's the last person you had a sleepover with?
Mike?

Frustration.
Do you have a friend of the opposite sex that you can tell everything to?
Yup.

Does the last person you held hands with mean a lot?
Mhmm.
Does it matter to you if your boyfriend/girlfriend smokes?
Yes.
Do you think you have made a difference in anyone's life?
Sure. Everyone changes the lives of everybody that they meet.
Which of your friends is the easiest to talk to?
Depends on what it's about.
What's going on between you and the last person you kissed?
We're dating.
What friend do you tell the most?

It's not really a secret :)

Yes.
Who was the last person you cried in front of?
My dad.
Are you good at hiding your feelings?
Sometimes.
How is life going for you right now?
It's okay.
Do you trust people easily?
Unless they have done something to break my trust.
Do you give out second chances easily?
I think everyone deserves them.
Do you smile a lot?
I guess.

Moving on Thursday.
How do you feel about change?

Listen Up
So on the way home tonight I was listening to some random country station on the radio and this upbeat catchy tune came up that I instantly fell in love with. So I made a mental note of what the song was called - "I Like It Like That" - and then tried to search for it. After much googling I finally found the radio station KX96 which it played on and learned a little more about this artist.
Born in Oshawa, Ontario, this young girl won the KX96 Superstar Search contest, with the prize of having a song recorded and played nationally on every radio station. Cool eh?
So here it is, complete with lyrics:
"I Like It Like That" - Michelle Boudrias
Sometimes I stray off the beaten path
Go full steam ahead when I should turn back
But I'll ride this train 'till it runs out of track
I have no regrets, 'cause I like it like that
Oh everyone's an expert on how I should live my life
But I'll wake up each day with a smile on my face
And I'll sleep satisfied
So how can it be that bad if I like it like that
He likes Dylan, I'll take The Stones
He'd move to the mountains, I'd head for the coast
We might not make a perfect match
But I'm finding out that I like it like that
Oh everyone's an expert on how I should live my life
But I'll wake up each day with a smile on my face
And I'll sleep satisfied
So how can it be that bad if I like it like that
I paint my sky a deeper blue
Believe in the day all my dreams come true
The good always wins, and love still lasts
I might be naive, but I like it like that
Don't need no reason other than the fact
That it's my life and I like it like that
I like it like that
I like it like that
I like it like that
I like it like that

"Making a Fist" by Naomi Shihab Nye
For the first time, on the road north of Tampico,
I felt the life sliding out of me,
a drum in the desert, harder and harder to hear.
I was seven, I lay in the car
watching palm trees swirl a sickening pattern past the glass.
My stomach was a melon split wide inside my skin.
"How do you know if you are going to die?"
I begged my mother.
We had been traveling for days.
With strange confidence she answered,
"When you can no longer make a fist."
Years later I smile to think of that journey,
the borders we must cross separately,
stamped with our unanswerable woes.
I who did not die, who am still living,
still lying in the backseat behind all my questions,
clenching and opening one small hand.

Check out this article on Yahoo.ca news today:
By Terri Theodore , The Canadian Press
VANCOUVER - A menagerie of nursing mothers, their babies, older children, some fathers, baby strollers and the media crammed clothing store H&M Thursday in a breastfeeding protest.
The women were angry over a store clerk's request to Manuela Valle last week to move to a change room while she nursed her two-month-old baby.
Veronica Polanska, one of the organizers of the so-called "nurse-in", said the protest wasn't about Valle or H&M specifically.
She said the women wanted to draw attention to the outrage they feel when any business suggests nursing in public is shameful and should be hidden.
"It's about every business, whether it's an airline or whether it's a restaurant, whether it's a pool ... it doesn't matter where it happens, it's not acceptable."
Astrid Lalonde didn't know Valle, but brought her six-week-old baby girl because she said society seems to have a poor perception of women who breastfeed in public, yet cleavage seems to be predominant.
"Breastfeeding is not a sexual thing," she said.
"But it is sad in our society where breasts are the one thing, or the one asset, that women can show to flaunt to get men. When I'm breastfeeding my child, I'm not trying to get a man."
Six years ago, when Yolonda Kozak was on a Vancouver bus, another woman reached over and disconnected her son as she was nursing him.
"I was such a new mother, I didn't have anything to say," she said.
Since then Kozak has been an advocate for public breastfeeding. "Now you can't stop me." Valle had planned to take her complaint to the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal.
In 2000, the B.C. Human Rights Commission issued a policy and procedure manual on the issue of breastfeeding and expressing milk in public.
"Entities that provide public services (or) facilities customarily available to the public also have a duty to accommodate lactating women," the policy states.
The policy even spells out that mothers are allowed to breastfeed or express milk on public benches found in shopping malls, museums, hospitals and restaurants.
H&M didn't return phones calls for a requested interview.
Elisabeth Sterken, the national director of the Infant Feeding Action Coalition, said her organization constantly gets complaints from women being harassed when they nurse their babies in public.
She tells the story of a woman who was ejected from a lingerie shop while trying to nurse and another woman at a public pool where an attendant called the police when she refused to go to the washroom to nurse her child.
"It's offensive to women that that attitude persists," Sterken said of the negative reaction to public breastfeeding.
While seeing plenty of cleavage is a fashion statement, Sterken said breastfeeding hasn't yet been embraced.
"We have also run amok with the whole sexualization of breast and the nurturing side of breasts is just not something that is very visible," Sterken said. "So there's still a lot of ignorance about the full capacity of breasts."
Sterken said most women in Canada - between 90 and 95 per cent - breastfeed their baby for some length of time after birth.
Marina Green, a lactation specialist at B.C.'s Women's and Children's Hospital, said for that reason, women nursing in public should be commonplace, but mothers still feel socially isolated.
Green said some women in the hospital's nursing groups who have no choice but to breastfeed in public "steel themselves" to take the unkind words or dirty looks from the public.
Both Green and Sterken agree that attitudes towards public breastfeeding are slowly shifting, but not fast enough.
Green said taking the issue to a human rights tribunal is probably one of the best ways to get the message across.
"The fact that it's news is remarkable in this day and age. We really have a long way to go in terms of shifting deep-seated attitudes."
Now I've never breastfed and am one of those that had felt kind of uncomfortable being in close proximity to a breastfeeding woman, but reading this article really got me thinking about this "controversial" issue.. There's nothing new about boobs and breastfeeding is a natural and normal thing. But when you think about how much focus is set upon one part of the human body, it seems pretty outrageous, doesn't it. As if a man or woman was defined by one physical aspect. Objectification is an ugly thing. So here's to breastfeeding, human rights, and every part of the human body. Because we are worth it - every inch of us - and we deserve the prerogative to let it shine.
Update:
H&M has apologized in a news release, saying that "it fully supports a woman's right to breastfeed and to ensure this can be done with dignity and respect in public...it will now redouble its efforts to ensure all employees are aware of the policy and that they are trained to anticipate the needs of breastfeeding mothers."
The same protest was made outside a La Senza in Winnepeg around the same time. Knowledge is power.

Mysteries Revealed
So every night on the drive home from work, there's always this certain stretch of road that is guaranteed to have a few branches on it. Actual tree branches, where it is advisable to swerve around them instead of running them over. And every night I drive by wondering what is going on with the trees in that area and why hasn't anyone done anything about it because it can be dangerous when it's busy. Anyways last night I was driving home, swerved around that cursed patch, and for some reason though the street was empty, I looked in my rear view mirror. And lo and behold, some little boy, maybe like 12 years old tops, was dragging this branch out in the middle of the road and left it there. What the frig! Who lets their kid out this late by themselves after midnight? And why does this child have such a weird hobby? Strange. But at least there is nothing wrong with the trees, except for the fact that every night, parts of them are being ripped off to lie in wait for some unexpecting car...
And ever wonder how chocolate is made? Well look no further, because as of yesterday (Thursday) morning, I am now a chocolatier apprentice. And man is it ever hard work. Four hours with no break and little rest the night before... not a good mix! But it was interesting work at least. Chocolate-making is a very exact science. To create the perfect chocolate bar, the chocolate itself must be heated and tempered to just the right temperature (between two Fahrenheit degrees), cooled for exactly the right time, and stored at just the right humidity. Not to mention you must work fast because it hardens quickly and you must be very careful of your workstation because chocolate hates water of any sort. But the chocolate there is delicious. It is organic fair trade and made with top-quality ingredients shipped from Europe. Contains nothing but cocoa butter (not the cheap powder), real cane sugar, and ground vanilla beans.
So how do you tell how good the chocolate is? By using three of your five senses:
1. Smell - Bring the chocolate under your nose. Can you smell the cocoa?
2. Touch - Break off a piece of chocolate. Does it break crisply?
3. Sight - Look at the chocolate itself. Is it smooth?
If you answered "yes" to all three, then the chocolate is nicely made. Look for chocolate specially marked "organic" because that's usually a sign of better quality and never miss out on the chocolate marked "fair trade". Because though you never really think about it, but chocolate is actually harvested and made in very harsh and deplorable conditions by people making next-to-nothing.
Just some food for thought.

Canada's Wonderland
This weekend, Mike took me to Wonderland and I have got to say, it is pretty freaking amazing.
I wanted my first rollercoaster to be the biggest so first thing we went on the Behemoth, Canada's newest and biggest. Starting off with a practically 90 degree drop, I seriously thought it was the end of life as I knew it - literally! Thank goodness it wasn't or Mike and I would've missed all the other good rides! But if you are very chicken like me, do yourself a huge favour and force yourself on all the rides. I even went on the Droptower - a ride that shot straight up in the air, lets you dangle for a moment, and then plunges you straight down to the ground - and as terrified of heights as I was, after you're back on the ground and your heart begins to beat again, it's just amazing. Anyways we went on Backlot Stunt Coaster (formerly Italian Job), Flight Deck (formerly Top Gun), Minebuster (the sketchy wooden one), Thunder Run, and the Action Theatre, all ones which I would definitely recommend.
Who doesn't love Wonderland, really. It's a huge amusement park that's got a little bit of something for everyone. Spinning rides, upside-down rides, crazy rides, scary rides, relaxing rides, wet rides... and when you get tired of the rides there are shows, pools, gift shops, carnival games, arcades, and heavily overpriced foods. Speaking of foods, when you go try a funnel cake. It's like the official Wonderland food, and though it's like $12 a plate, it's definitely worth it if only for the experience. And don't be a sucker and miss the shows. I made Mike watch one and though he thought it was going to be lame, even he was amazed and impressed by the acrobatic feats. In fact I think he was more excited than I was haha. We spent a lot of time at the arcade and watching the carnival games as well. Well mostly watching the carnival games and talking about how big of a scam they were. Mike did try his hand at the ring toss, whack-a-mole, and fool-the-guesser though. He saw a lot of people with the huge prizes and wanted to win one and though he came really close in whack-a-mole twice, he fooled the guesser and won me a pikachu :)
So yes, go to Wonderland this summer. And if you've got an extra ticket, I certainly wouldn't mind going again ;)

"Friday I'm In Love" - The Cure
Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too
Thursday I don't care about you
It's Friday, I'm in love
Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
Oh Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday I'm in love
Saturday, wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday, never hesitate...
I don't care if Monday's black
Tuesday, Wednesday - heart attack
Thursday, never looking back
It's Friday, I'm in love
Monday, you can hold your head
Tuesday, Wednesday stay in bed
Or Thursday - watch the walls instead
It's Friday, I'm in love
Saturday, wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday, never hesitate...
Dressed up to the eyes
It's a wonderful surprise
To see your shoes and your spirits rise
Throwing out your frown
And just smiling at the sound
And as sleek as a shriek
Spinning 'round and 'round
Always take a big bite
It's such a gorgeous sight
To see you eat in the middle of the night
You can never get enough
Enough of this stuff
It's Friday, I'm in love
I don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too
Thursday I don't care about you
It's Friday, I'm in love
Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday I'm in love

Music to Warm the Delicate Strings of Your Heart
I’m already worried that I might forget
How to laugh, how to love
How to live, how to learn
I want to die with a smile when it comes my turn"
So I came across a Canadian artist that I have fallen in love with. With songs slow but catchy, His name's David Myles, and just from listening to his songs posted on Myspace I could definitely see myself picking up a copy of a cd for a long weekend drive.
Anways I just thought I would spread the joy.
Check him out at http://www.myspace.com/davidmyles.

New House
Went up to Hamilton the past Sunday to look at rooms for next year. Out of the like 5 that we visited, only one that we went to was really like "Yeah I could live here." One was close but the house was old and cramped, another was very small, and one was so dirty that we were allowed to walk around the shag carpeting with wet shoes on - and even with the five of us plus the landlord showing us around, it didnt' make much of a difference.
The place that Mike and I did like was this basement apartment of a family house. Separate entrance, spacious bedrooms, fully furnished, own kitchen, washroom, common room, etc... it's an older basement and certainly not perfect but definitely livable and better than the other places we had looked. So needless to say, we called the next morning and we're going this weekend to sign the lease!
Anyways be sure to come visit sometime. If all goes well we move in on the first :D

Mall & Beach-ing
On Saturday, Mike took me to the mall Vaughan Mills, which I had heard so much about. And no wonder it's so famous: the place is huge and with all the nice stores that big Ontario malls have, they also have outlet ones so that you can spend a lot and feel great knowing that you saved a ton still. For example, the shoes Mike was looking at was $150 in one store and in the Nike outlet they were $70. And the mall is so big that they have neighbourhoods. And apparently there is a racetrack and bowling alley, but we never really saw them. Saw an arcade though, but we never went back to stop in. Oh and never order bubble tea with double the tapioca. We did that by accident and like half the cup was bubbles. Not as good as some might think...
Went to the beach yesterday with Mike, Nic, Jesse, and Carmen. The beach at Wasaga was definitely the most crowded beach I have ever seen. The road that goes around it stretches on forever, but all while you are looking out the window wondering if there was even place for you to put a towel down. Parking alone took 20 minutes. But though it was pretty windy, it was still a lot of fun. The water was warm and wavy, and for those like me who aren't very good at swimming, the water doesn't go above your head even if you go really far. If you go to Beach One there's a lot of neat stores, which we never went into but I would love to check them out sometime. Pedro's Gift Shop looked interesting. The place we did go to, Banana's (a bar) served drinks in actual coconuts with those drink umbrellas. Definitely worth the big bill. The onion rings that I had were nice and juicy, and everyone's food looked really good. If you get a meal they give you a massive amount of fries. Though we didnt' stay that late, I hear from Dil at work that you can see the entire sunset from Wasaga, and it's one of the most beautiful things she's seen.

"Rush of Blood to the Head" - Coldplay
He said, "I'm going to buy this place and burn it down
I'm going to put it six feet underground"
He said, "I'm going to buy this place and watch it fall
Stand here beside me baby in the crumbling walls"
"Oh I'm going to buy this place and start a fire
Stand here until I fill all your heart's desires
Because I'm going to buy this place and see it burn
And do back the things it did to you in return"
He said, "I'm going to buy a gun and start a war
If you can tell me something worth fighting for
Oh and I'm goling to buy this place, that's what I said
Blame it upon a rush of blood to the head"
Honey, all the movements you're starting to make
See me crumble and fall on my face
And I know the mistakes that I made
See it all disappear without trace
And they call as they beckon you on
They said, "Start as you mean to go on
Start as you mean to go on"
He said, "I'm going to buy this place and see it go
And stand here beside me baby watch the orange glow
Some'll laugh and some just sit and cry
You just sit down there and you wonder why"
"So I'm going to buy a gun and start a war
If you can tell me something worth fighting for
And I'm going to buy this place, that's what I said
Blame it upon a rush of blood to the head
Oh to the head"
Honey, all the movements you're starting to make
See me crumble and fall on my face
And I know the mistakes that I made
See it disappear without trace
And they call as they beckon you on
They say, "Start as you mean to go on
As you mean to go on, as you mean to go on"
"So meet me by the bridge, meet me by the lane
When am I going to see that pretty face again
Meet me on the road, meet me where I said
Blame it all upon a rush of blood to the head"
