Today I Went to a Sales Interview.

Went to a sales interview today. This company has been at the school multiple times every year trying to pick up students with promises of valuable skills training and commission work and I've always passed by because honestly, commission sales? Give me a break. When they started advertising a guaranteed pay of $15/hour though, I thought I might as well go to the interview and see what it's about.

The three-part interview spanning an hour and a half was pretty interesting. Though there were only two other people with interviews at the same time today, I could feel the friendly competition already, especially from one middle-aged lady. Not really sure what was going on there. The product we were to promote seemed pretty decent and of high quality (a pair of scissors cut cleanly through a penny!). And though the structure of appointment settings and increasing commission seemed very promising, thank God for a critical voice in the back of my head reminding me that the view was an extremely optimistic one and extremely unlikely, especially starting out. But I was all ready to at least give it a shot when - and here's the kicker - they ask for a security deposit on your appointment demo set. Though they made it seem as reasonable as they could, the point was they were basically asking you to pay them to work there. Screw that.

I stayed and acted as if I had wanted a job, completing the third part of the interview, showed initiative and eagerness to start. And - no surprise here - I was hired and invited to begin training immediately.

Going to call them Monday, let them know that I have much better things to do with my time: unemployment.

What I Learned This Week

From Mike's Pop Music class:

1. The Who is fantastic and deserves appreciation. Never realized how hardcore they were, tackling issues that no one else had dared to sing about before. Not to mention their incorporation of modernistic avant-gard art. Love!

2. Banging on your keyboard sounds horrific. I used to do that, not really thinking about it. But now after hearing someone else do it, it sounded like she was breaking the laptop and it was most unpleasant.

From Jesse's Call of Duty:

1. Spending twelve hours to complete one mission... is not worth it.

From The Sims 3:

1. To make quick bucks, best friend the rich ones and ask them to move in with you. You can kick them out afterwards!

2. You can disable aging through the Options menu. Frig, why did I not know that before?

From Cooking:

1. When making rice, use half to two-thirds of a cup per person. One cup is way too much!

2. Soup too spicy? A few eggs will neutralize that right up.

Yes I have it. And yes it sucks but I'm not too worried about it. Just wash your hands people. If you're still terrified, swab your nose and gargle with warm salt water every day and drink lots of hot liquids. And if you already have it, for goodness sakes don't run to the nearest clinic and spread it around. Here's a little something to keep you (but mostly me) occupied.

E-mail Overload!

Decided it was finally time to change my e-mail address. The one I've been using was literally my third e-mail address ever, back when MSN Messenger came out (or at least since I've been aware of it). Not to mention the same old username being used across different domains... Talk about needing an update!

So tonight consisted of a MASSIVE e-mail consolidation, where I created a new account and merged all existing accounts into that one. Thank God for the wonders of Gmail in making this possible.

My only complaint? That it's just not possible to transfer one Google account to another, so it looks like I'll be stuck with "candys188" until the rest of my life - or whenever they make that possible.

The new e-mail is exported to WLM contacts and posted on Facebook for all to see. If you don't have it, I'm sorry I missed you somehow... leave a comment on this post and I'll send it to you ASAP. But it is 3:30 a.m. and I am pretty wiped.

Two Halves Do Not Make A Whole

I hate it when people say how they need to be in a relationship, as if they weren't complete without being romantically attached to someone. You're so young, I want to tell them, you've got your whole life ahead of you. Why put everything on hold to look for someone now?

Relationships are overrated. The media makes sure of it. You'll be hard-pressed to find a movie or show without someone falling in love as the happy ending to whatever was the matter in the first place. Sure there are benefits to being in a relationship but there are definitely benefits to being single as well! Being in a relationship takes a lot of time and hard work, something that's not easy and certainly not all sunshine and lollipops.

So what if you're single? There's certainly nothing wrong with that and don't let anyone tell you there's something wrong with you either. It's a shame how people are so focused on their "other half" before they even try to be complete themselves.

Now don't get me wrong, I am in a committed, loving relationship right now and I'm happy where I am, but I am so glad I learned to be happy single beforehand and I know that if I'm single again I will still be happy. My plan is to get married someday - I already have vague ideas what I want - and I know it will be fantastic. But if I don't, I know for a fact that my quality of life isn't going to diminish any.

The bottom line is: you choose how to experience your own life. If you aren't happy with yourself on your own, you certainly won't be happy with someone else in the picture.

1. Bought Pond's Cold Cream at Shoppers on sale, only to have the best cashier ever bring me a pack that was two-for-one at the sale price. Made my day.

2. Went with Mike to try out a fancy restaurant we've always been curious about. Got food poisoning. Did not make my day.

Averaging it out, I'd say the day was pretty meh.

"Hair" I Am, Did You Miss Me?

Lately I've decided to master (at least passably) the French braid. I've pretty much always just let my hair be what it wants to be with nothing more than a quick brush-through and the occasional ponytail or messy bun. So rarely have I done anything with my hair that the other day when I was trying out a normal braid, I realized I am really, really bad at it. And what kind of girl is unable to braid their own hair? I think I've kept up the naturalist/tomboy phase too long. So of course I had to be able to do the hardest braid I knew. After a week of messy braids, I finally got it without a large noticeable bump on top. Super proud right now.

Other updates: Hamster Chouji is still alive and kicking. Bought a much-needed space heater. Fell in love with Cyber Clean. Brought out the winter coat. On a new pill. Ate lots of bananas. And trying to kick the habit of double-spacing after each sentence, but it's so hard I'm beginning to think double-spacing is like crack.

Oh and totally falling in love with this season of Heroes with Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye, one of my absolute favourite shows. Makes me so happy every time I watch it, seriously.

Shopping Daze

Went to Limeridge yesterday with Jess and Sandra, planning to "just browse" with a limit of ONE "fantastic feel-good buy". Ohh the good intentions of mice and men...

Of course most stores had major sales or we used Sandra's SPC on double discount day, so they are all justifiable.

Jess convinced me to try Bourbon Chicken, apparently the new Manchu Wok. I have to say the chicken is delicious but the chinese food is very north american-ized. Still delicious though I'm sure that any "real" asian would scoff at that comment.

So anyways I bought a couple of longsleeves from GAP, a super comfy sweater from Urban Outfitters (only $15!), and a beautiful pair of Skerry Vinter boots from Trehorn, in "ocean depths".

Side note: I love love LOVE the boots - usually when it rains I have to trek through a soggy, muddy path to get home in canvas shoes or flip flips but no more! I am a brave new person. And who says that shopping isn't therapeutic?

I Don't Know About You, But...

Terminator 2 really touched my heart last night.

Usually not really an Arnold fan but something about a robot learning to care and to love others is oddly sexy, if only because he sacrificed himself at the end to save mankind. Blowing stuff up while doing it helps of course. Did you know his original claim to fame was being named Mr. Universe back when he was steroidly jacked up? Man, talk about unreal expectations for guys.

I Am Famous On The Internets

Took a break from the laptop for a while, opting to play Sims 3 religiously on the boyfriend's high-tech computer. So addicting! Anyways, I'm back now with an e-mail informing me of my fame:

The story: Lately my room had become the study hub and with the construction upstairs, everyone was sporting earplugs. After a few days use, we started to wonder what to do with them and so I wrote in to this website that supports some kind of program every time a question is answered and lo and behold, my question was answered. I swear I typed "a while"!

On The Internets

'Kay so no one updates their blog anymore. After a binding agreement that we all would. What is up with that?

I'm starting to get back into the swing of all things internet. No longer passively just browsing through feeds, I have activity on facebook, twitter, and - you guessed it - this blog. So.

Still not getting the whole "twitter" yet. Does anyone actually have the time to read all the updates from all 29374 people that they follow? And what's with the random people following me? Could it be that some people just can't get enough of the mundane happenings of the people around them so much so that they want to read about everybody else's? Or are all of my updates just that riveting? I don't know but I kind of like to think it's the last one. Realized I had 37 updates already. I swear I don't know how that even happened.

First official drunk photos on Facebook. Pretty obvious too, imo. Did I really look that out of it in real life? But Nic's been going around telling people I gave lap dances. THAT IS NOT TRUE. I was hugging my date and it just so happened I was sitting on him at the same time. And with music that loud, of course your body is going to move a little to the beat. So if you get any wind of the rumour, you have heard the truth from me and you can knock off whoever told you such a silly thing in the first place.

So yeah, take this as a reminder to update your blog. Because I know you are all still alive and breathing and if you can do that, you can type up an update once in a while. I just miss you guys, that's all.

Time for another Life Update

Currently getting settled into my new room.  I like the bigger size and brightness but because I have pretty much the same amount of stuff it feels pretty empty.  So I've been adding little touches here and there, to try to make it feel more lived in.  When I have a camera, I'll take some pictures.

I've been satiating my creative outlet with some papercrafts lately.  Printed and made a couple of nanibirds to add some cheerfulness to my desk.  The creator spent some time in Japan and he was always going around asking "what?" ("nani" in Japanese) so much that he started drawing birds saying it, which eventually he turned into papertoys.  A nice reminder to keep inquisitive.

For the first term of summer school I'm taking two classes, physics and macroeconomics.  And wow do they ever take a lot of work.  Physics is fun when you understand it but a pain to get through if you don't.  For the class in macro we just basically sit around and for a grueling 2 1/2 hours straight try to understand just what our professor is saying.  He's got a thick accent and moves over everything at a fairly fast pace, it's hard to keep up.  Had the first test though, thought it was all right.

Ten Tips You Probably Already Know About Keeping Clean

Some hygiene tips I've come across over the years:

1.  Wash hair every other day.  Will need a couple of weeks for hair to adjust but is ultimately better.

2.  Fold your underwear.  Wrinkled ones show more under tight pants.

3.  Combing conditioner through your hair leaves you with less tangles.

4.  Every cup left overnight needs to be washed, even if it just had water in it.  You'd be surprised how much dust you end up drinking if you don't.

5.  Don't put bar soap directly on your loofah or bath flower.  Lather your skin first and then exfoliate to avoid a scummy mess.

6.  Wait at least one hour after eating to brush your teeth.  The acid in your food weakens your enamel.

7.  If your face feels dry after you wash it, your facewash is too harsh.

8.  Only use cotton swabs on the outside of your ears.  Contrary to popular belief, ears are self-cleaning and only require a quick immersion in water whenever you bathe or shower.  Make sure you get all the water out (through shaking yoru head, plugging your nose) to avoid infection.

9.  Don't leave your toothbrush in the bathroom.  Do you really want to brush your teeth with the same bacteria crawling all over it as in the toilet?

10.  Be careful with whom you share your toothpaste with.  Quickest way to get mono.  Seriously.
