"Rush of Blood to the Head" - Coldplay

He said, "I'm going to buy this place and burn it down
I'm going to put it six feet underground"
He said, "I'm going to buy this place and watch it fall
Stand here beside me baby in the crumbling walls"

"Oh I'm going to buy this place and start a fire
Stand here until I fill all your heart's desires
Because I'm going to buy this place and see it burn
And do back the things it did to you in return"

He said, "I'm going to buy a gun and start a war
If you can tell me something worth fighting for
Oh and I'm goling to buy this place, that's what I said
Blame it upon a rush of blood to the head"

Honey, all the movements you're starting to make
See me crumble and fall on my face
And I know the mistakes that I made
See it all disappear without trace

And they call as they beckon you on
They said, "Start as you mean to go on
Start as you mean to go on"

He said, "I'm going to buy this place and see it go
And stand here beside me baby watch the orange glow
Some'll laugh and some just sit and cry
You just sit down there and you wonder why"

"So I'm going to buy a gun and start a war
If you can tell me something worth fighting for
And I'm going to buy this place, that's what I said
Blame it upon a rush of blood to the head
Oh to the head"

Honey, all the movements you're starting to make
See me crumble and fall on my face
And I know the mistakes that I made
See it disappear without trace

And they call as they beckon you on
They say, "Start as you mean to go on
As you mean to go on, as you mean to go on"

"So meet me by the bridge, meet me by the lane
When am I going to see that pretty face again
Meet me on the road, meet me where I said
Blame it all upon a rush of blood to the head"

A Sure Path To Anyone's Heart

I love eating out.  Food always tastes so great when made by other people.  Especially other people who know how to make good food.  And when you work night shifts sitting and talking and being frustrated with people who may not be as nice as others... well you just want food.

So luckily there are a couple of great places in Richmond Hill close by which I love.

The first is a new restaurant called "My Kitchen".  It's in the plaza across and down the street from where I work and it has got to be one of my favourite places for chinese food.  The people there are so wonderful and the food is so delicious.  The last time I went all I got was fried rice and shared some with one of my coworkers and they thought it was amazing.  One of those places where if you go once you know you have to return.

Another place that I just discovered today is called "Charlotte's Food".  Not a restaurant but more of an over-the-counter-baked-goods place.  When I first walked in, the other customer in the store was like, "they make the best pies, don't they?"  and this guy works at a bank and bought three chicken pot pies so you know he's not lying to you.  Anyways I got the apple pie because the woman just made it and even though it was cold by the time I had it, trust me - it was good pie.  And healthy for you too, as the lady will talk all day about.

So there.  Now if you're ever stuck starving in Richmond Hill you know exactly where to go.

You can thank me with dinner, I don't mind :)

Summer So Far As A Resident Of Toronto

Besides the tourist attractions and the shopping, there's only really one other thing worth talking about in Toronto: the weather.

Holy crap.

The days are very hot and humid (see: 38*C on Saturday) and because of the extreme heat and humidity you get random massive downpours during the day and an earth-rocking thunderstorm at night.

Driving home from Alliston Monday afternoon I got caught in one such massive downpours on the highway and let me tell you it was one of the scariest driving experiences of my life. I was going along the usually 120 km/h when it started raining a little bit. Okay that was fine. But then out of nowhere it was like the sky was falling it rained so hard. With the wipers maxed out you could only just barely see the car right in front of you. Traffic on the highway slowed to a 20-30 km/h crawl, and I was in the left (aka. fast) lane. This went on for what seemed like an eternity and then all of a sudden it lifted and returned to normal medium wiper-speed rain. And then like 1/2 an hour later, the rain was gone and it was sunny as if it had never rained at all. Which made it feel kind of weird having to blame my lateness to work on a downpour...

Ooohm.

One thing that always surprises me is how much our bodies are in tune with the sun.

Even if you're not a morning person, when you wake up early on a bright sunny day you can't help but feel energetic and fabulous. Waking up at noon (or later) on such a day you end up feeling groggy and lazy. Waking up well past nighttime... let's just say your body knows you missed out on something.

On a dark cloudy day, whatever time you wake up it is like an automatic downer. Things may be going great but well before the day is done you will still feel like the day dragged on.

So what's the ideal way to maximize your energy level for the day you ask?

According to a teacher who seemed to know all about this stuff, the "perfect" day begins with waking up at sunrise, rest and relaxation around noon to about 2, and then you're good to go until about 9-10 in the evening.

Work Story #194

I work as a telephone surveyor and when making 350+ calls a night you get some very interesting ones. One thing I find can be pretty boring are answering machines. Most people say the same things or just leave it to the robotic default voice to do their business for them (boo). However, there are some that just strike you as very strange. One such message consisted entirely of a baby screaming, followed by a metallic recorded "Leave a message." Where do I even begin...

My Toilet Is Haunted

It's only a bit after the end of May but already it feels like it's been summer for a while. Two weeks into a job and already I've fallen into a drab routine, though today I did mix it up a little - being almost late for work. Life is as glamourous as you make it I suppose.

Living in an apartment has its ups. You get to meet new people every day and if you don't really like them there's very little chance you will ever see them again. Not that there's anyone not to like, but sometimes conversations just turn awkward. And the lines some people use. "Are you new in this building, I've never seen you around" is a standard one. This building has 17 floors, all of which have at least 10 units and who knows how many people in each of them. Even if you stake out the lobby for weeks you have no way of meeting everyone. I guess if you are new, hearing that sounds a little impressive that someone was just that friendly. But if you aren't and have been there for years, then a line like that would probably just make things even more awkward. But who knows, maybe that line is a big hook.

One thing I hate about Toronto is the parking lot. Parking lots I hate in general. They house the record for most of the parking incidents which occur every day. Parking is not my forte and so many cars crammed into as tight a space as possible just screams disaster for me. I'm the kind of person who will gladly walk from the back spaces to escape the havoc. Besides, the exercise is good for you anyways. But in Toronto it doesn't matter how far back you park: there are so many cars that even to get to the back requires excessive maneuvering and dodging of cars. No wonder so many people opt for public transportation. With some subway lines going straight into malls itself, it's a wonder people drive to these places at all. But I guess if nobody drove parking lots would no longer be such a scary place, and then the empty parking lots wouldn't stay every empty for long. So I guess there's no solution, except maybe to create automatic parking cars.

Anyways it's getting late and there's a call I've got to be making. Have a good night!

p.s. The toilet in my dad's room is actually haunted. Repairpeople have been coming by every couple of weeks to fix the problem but it still makes gurgling noises all night. I feel like I'm about to get raped by a ghost every time one of the plumbers leaves the door open. *shudders*

"The Darkling Thrush" by Thomas Hardy

I leant upon a coppice gate
When Frost was spectre-gray,
And Winter's dregs made desolate
The weakening eye of day.
The tangled bine-stems scored the sky
Like strings of broken lyres,
And all mankind that haunted nigh
Had sought their household fires.

The land's sharp features seemed to be
The Century's corpse outleant,
His crypt the cloudy canopy,
The wind his death-lament.
The ancient pulse of germ and birth
Was shrunken hard and dry,
And every spirit upon earth
Seemed fevourless as I.

At once a voice arose among
The bleak twigs overhead
In a full-hearted evensong
Of joy illimited;
An aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small,
In blast-beruffled plume,
Had chosen thus to fling his soul
Upon the growing gloom.

So little cause for carolings
Of such ecstatic sound
Was written on terrestrial things
Afar or nigh around,
That I could think there trembled through
His happy good-night air
Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew
And I was unaware.

Craap.

Don't you hate it when things are all messed up, and you have no one to blame but yourself? In a way it makes you even angrier because it was your own stupidity and no one else's, and no one likes to be reminded of their stupidity.

Let's use a (hypothetical?) example from school:

Candice has a term paper due on Thursday and another one on Monday. Wednesday night she frets and fritters about the essay but cannot seem to make any progress. "I'll give myself the weekend to do it," she says. "There will be a mark deduction but that is better than nothing." Candice falls into a deep sleep well into Friday, exhausted from her effort. Waking up so late on Friday, she decides to give herself a bit of a break, because it's always good to have time to recoup. "Tomorrow I will work on them both," she chants. Tomorrow (Saturday) comes along and Candice's friend urges her to watch a series. "One episode," Candice says. "I guess I could do a couple more," she finds herself saying on the insistence of her friend. Time passes. Pretty soon it's time for bed again. "Early to bed, early to rise!" Candice proclaims. "Tomorrow for sure." But what the heck, Candice cannot sleep! After laying in bed for hours (even pretending to try to stay awake) at 5 am she finally gets up and tries to make herself something to eat. She eats, bums around until after 7, until she realizes "Holy crap my day!" and tries desperately to sleep. Finally, around 9-ish in the morning, Candice falls asleep, waking up at noon. To prepare for the day she makes her foolproof scrambled eggs, a large mug of tea, and gets down and dirty with her laptop. Only to find out that Candice has TWO term papers due on Monday. WHAT THE FRIG. But the more important question is, why is Sa-Candice doing blogging this instead of working? At that exact moment, a saber tooth tiger smashes through the window and lunges at her beautiful body, killing her instantly. The answers to these questions forever remain unknown.

"Bad Day" - Daniel Powter

I really like this video. A lot of the ones with kind of the same story turn out to be really cheesy. But this one is actually sweet.

Funny what comes to mind when you're having a bad day. Sometimes there's really no reason, but the way you look at things just totally switch around from the positive to the negative. Whenever I'm grumpy and this song comes on, it makes me take a step back and realize that whatever I had made such a big deal of in my mind was not really that big of a deal at all - it was just how I chose to perceive it. By realizing and acknowledging the fact that a "bad day" is all that it is, I can work on improving my attitude and changing it around. So go ahead, turn it up and sing along. It's just one of those songs that is meant for doing just that :)

10 000-Can Pop Seizure Leaves Seller Puzzled

A Prince Edward Island man who had almost 10,000 cans of pop seized in an Environment Department sting can't understand why the province is making such a fuss.

It is illegal to sell flavoured, carbonated beverages in cans on P.E.I. under a law that dates back to 1984, but it won't be on the books much longer. On May 1, the Island can ban will end.

"At this stage of the game, when they're going to be legalizing it in a couple of months, they could have given me perhaps a heads-up or a warning," Errol Waugh, who runs a bottle exchange in Kensington, told CBC News Wednesday.

Last week, when he heard people had been selling canned pop at the Jack Frost Festival in Charlottetown, Waugh decided to make a special off-Island trip. He brought back five pallets of Pepsi-Cola in his pickup — almost 10,000 cans.

On Tuesday, however, one of his customers turned out to be an undercover enforcement officer with the Environment Department. The canned pop bust was P.E.I.'s largest ever.

Waugh admits to having peddled cans on a small scale for some time now. Whenever he'd go to the mainland, Islanders would ask him to pick up some canned pop. He said he'd make about a dollar on each 12-pack.

"It would be different if I was peddling drugs or contraband cigarettes or this type of thing," said Waugh.

"Everybody wants the canned pop, and if they don't get it from me, they're going to go across and get it themselves."

Waugh was not alone this week in trying to get an early start on canned pop sales. Three warnings were issued Wednesday to retailers in downtown Charlottetown. They were given until the end of business Thursday to remove the product.

Unlike the Charlottetown retailers, Waugh could be fined $1,000. He is hoping instead that officials will eventually return the pop.

Waugh says he'll likely get out of the canned pop business when it becomes legal, since the novelty of canned pop will be but a memory.
