And All At Once The Crowd Begins To Sing

Sometimes I lie in bed thinking about the choices I have made in my life and wonder if I am doing the right thing. Whether I'm where I should be, doing what I'm supposed to do. Some nights the answer is yes, how could it possibly be anything else? But other times I'm not so sure.

On the ride from Montreal to Hamilton, I struck a conversation with the person in the next seat and we had a great chat the entire flight - so much so that we were both surprised when the plane descended! A part of the conversation we shared some of our travels, our plans, and our dreams. We spoke of the places we would love to go, the things we wanted to do. I mentioned that I would most likely have to wait quite a while to do all these things and he urged me to not wait until he was 45 to do them like he did. And he was so confident in the things he was going to do. His dreams were not a question of "if" but of "when", and that "when" was very reachable.

I admire people like that. People who know what they're going to do and no matter what they do it. Some days I find myself heading towards the one of the attitudes I dislike the most: apathy. When you just throw up your hands and exclaim "I don't know and I don't care!" That scares me. Never do I want to be like that. And yet here I sit, with no goal and no motivation, at the supposed prime of my life.

Well no more. If there's one thing I know that is not the path I want to head down and 2007 is too precious of a year to waste, especially at the very end. 2008 is just around the corner, and with it brings a new semester, a new set of months, and most certainly a new beginning. Two days is all that's left of this year. I don't know about you but I'm going to resolve to borrow some of the attitude of a certain iconic figure and for those times when I do throw up my hands, the words coming out of my mouth I will strive to make them be: "To infinity... and beyond!"

What You're Looking For You Won't Find It In Me

Do you know where your heart is?
Do you think you can find it?

Or did you trade it for something

Somewhere better just to have it?

Do you know where your love is?

Do you think that you lost it?

You felt it so strong, but

Nothing's turned out how you wanted

- "Say" (OneRepublic)

We’ve been burning money like gasoline
Trying to take us to the next dream

We’ve been tapping into something

I can’t explain it but I’m trying, yeah I’m trying

Some would say we’re reaching too high

If that’s makes me guilty I don’t want any alibis

- "Everything Is Possible" (Enation)

Found the right words

But they only died on my lips

- "Silhoutte" (Yellow Second)

Slip away with me, close your eyes you’re free

Dreams are often lost, but heaven’s not far off

- "10,000 x 10,000" (The Myriad)

Give it up or get it right

I’m going under yeah, but not without a fight

- "Hello To Never" (Yellow Second)

I'm leaping out too far

I've never been so sure

Letting go of charts

And falling close to stars

- "Captiva" (Falling Up)

"BE CONFIDENT. I'm Flalesse."

Just saw that ad in the bottom of an msn conversation. It is part of a series by the company to sell birth control. That makes me mad. HELLO, I want to shout out, BIRTH CONTROL IS NOT AN INDICATION OF CONFIDENCE! If you think having sex or birth control makes you a smart, sexy, and amazing woman, then sorry to say honey but you have got it all wrong.

As if we needed to satisfy some guy's hormonal urges to make us feel that way...

Ugh!

P.S.
All that but vice-versa to guys too. Seriously, we should ALL know better!

Good Food, Good Friends, And Umm... Corn Chowdah.

So I've been back for two full days now and what a time it's been. I've only been gone for a couple of months but in some ways it seems like forever. Ten days seemed like a while but now it seems like hardly enough. People have been so great; my family here, my friends. Homesickness had never ever been a problem for me, but there have been so many memories made here that it makes it impossible to miss. I hear so many people saying how they want to get out of this place so bad, but that's only because they don't realize how good they've got it until they don't got it anymore.

I was talking over msn with a good friend I haven't seen for a while. She's been away out west for months, training for the mission field. Friday she completed her training and Monday she traveled all the way to Thailand. I didn't think we'd be able to stay in contact but she found some way to get online which was great. Now I've never been to Thailand and though the names sound kind of similar it seems a lot different than Taiwan so I don't have a clue what it's like there. But what a difference it would be from here! And by "here" I mean North America.

Wow totally started going off on a tangent, but anyways I'll let her tell her own story; it's not mine to say.

Anyways I arrived safe and sound. The plane from Halifax to Charlottetown was the tiniest I had ever seen; an 18 seater, with two rows of one. When I walked out of the tunnel to get to the plane outside, I wasn't sure if that was the plane I was supposed to get on or a private one. Almost veered off to a different plane LOL. But though it had arrived late and there weren't as many amenities as say, a jumbo jet, it was an incredible experience. You could feel every bit of that aircraft taking off and its journey in the sky. If I was ever to fly a plane, I would want it to be a small one like that one. It even had two open propellers instead of the large cylindrical cups - a very nice old school charm. I even saw the sun disappear under the Nova Scotia horizon. If you have never watched the sun go down, go do so right now.

The family here had a big get-together lunch here yesterday - it was wonderful. People came all the way from Murray Harbour for Jon because he was given an offer he couldn't refuse to go out west for a couple of months. He's a strong worker and is appreciated and in high demand over there, which is great. But two months is a while, and it will be sad to see him have to go right after Christmas. It is an honour though, and I'm really happy for him.

Josie is due in March. If you ask her she is able to tell you exactly how many days it has been, centimetres it is, and how many pounds she has gained since. Quite amazing! Dan seems so excited and was extra jolly for those few minutes that we saw each other. They are going to make amazing parents!

Over the last couple of days I've been lucky enough to hang out with some really good friends, namely Morissa, Katie, and Courtney. Morissa I've known ever since I started school on the Island in grade five and Katie and Courtney have been amazing friends since grade eight when I switched schools. We each have had our fights and fallouts but there has definitely been way more fantastic times and great memories made.

Speaking of memories, I was looking through some old files on this computer today and found tons of pictures, many I had completely forgotten about from 2004-2006 that I had taken with my digital camera. They're uploaded to Facebook so if you want to check that out go right ahead. Feel free to tag yourself too, since I'm too lazy to do any. And sorry if there's not many pictures of you; I realized as I was going through them how I would be snap-happy at certain times and other just as big times there would hardly be any. But if you really wanted, you could dig through your old photos and make an album yourself. No pressure though. At least not a big one...

Anyhoo it is late and I want to get up before 10 am tomorrow so goodnight all of the maybe one random person who accidentally stumbles across this! And leave a comment too if you've got time or even if you don't. I miss those.

PERSONAL OPINION CONFESSIONS

1. Do you hate George Bush:
No I feel bad for him, with everyone always blasting him down. I don't know much about politics but I'm sure he did some great things for the country too. Also I read an article interviewing his daughter on Times and it's funny how we never really think about what their family is going through having to listen to all this.

2. Do you think abortion is horrible and should be illegal?
For me, I think life starts the moment that sperm hits the egg. I mean as soon as that happens, the egg starts to divide and it is an incredible process. And if you really didn't want your baby, then there is always adoption, no matter what the circumstances for their conception was.

Not Alone!

Sometimes, when you're stuck being alone in your room trying to study for finals, you come across something that tells you that you are not so alone after all, at least in your opinions. It's a reassuring thing.

Math Happy

Thank goodness for Google, my go-to for math questions that no one on my msn at the moment can answer. Such as "Why does m stand for slope?" and "I love pi. Where can I get a thong to show this?"

Feeling quotatious? Solve your math craving with some of these:

"Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas."
~ Albert Einstein

"Black holes result from God dividing the universe by zero."
~ Author Unknown

"I never did very well in math - I could never seem to persuade the teacher that I hadn't meant my answers literally."
~ Calvin Trillin

"Math is radical!"

"Go down deep enough into anything and you will find mathematics."
~ Dean Schlicter

"A mathematician is a device for turning coffee into theorems."
~ Paul Erdos

"Pure mathematics is the world's best game. It is more absorbing than chess, more of a gamble than poker, and lasts longer than Monopoly. It's free. It can be played anywhere - Archimedes did it in a bathtub."
~ Richard J. Trudeau

“Mathematics may be defined as the subject in which we never know what we are talking about, nor whether what we are saying is true.”
~Bertrand Russell

"Arithmetic is being able to count up to twenty without taking off your shoes."
~ Mickey Mouse

"'Every minute dies a man, Every minute one is born;' I need hardly point out to you that this calculation would tend to keep the sum total of the world's population in a state of perpetual equipoise, whereas it is a well-known fact that the said sum total is constantly on the increase. I would therefore take the liberty of suggesting that in the next edition of your excellent poem the erroneous calculation to which I refer should be corrected as follows: "Every moment dies a man, And one and a sixteenth is born." I may add that the exact figures are 1.067, but something must, of course, be conceded to the laws of metre."
~ Charles Babbage, letter to Alfred, Lord Tennyson, about a couplet in his "The Vision of Sin"

"Math is fun!"
~ L Griffin, written at the top of the board before every class

Looking for a way to show that someone you are both smart and sophisticated? Count on these lines:

I don't know if you're in my range, but I'd sure like to take you home to my domain.

I wish I were a derivative so I could lie tangent to your curves.

My love for you is a monotonically increasing unbounded function.

Your beauty defies real and complex analysis.

You and I add up better than a Riemann sum.

Hey baby, what's your sine?

If I were sine squared and you were cosine squared together we'd be one.

Are you the square root of 2? Because I feel irrational when I am around you.

Ever wonder what L’Hopital’s rule has to say about limits in the form of me over you?

Nice calculator. Wanna iterate?

How can I know so many hundreds of digits of pi and not the digits of your phone number?

Now if I can only actually do some math!

"I Am There" by James Dillet Freeman

Do you need Me ?
I am there.
You cannot see Me, yet I am the light you see by.
You cannot hear Me, yet I speak through your voice.
You cannot feel Me, yet I am the power at work in your hands.

I am at work, though you do not understand My ways.
I am at work, though you do not understand My works.
I am not strange visions. I am not mysteries.

Only in absolute stillness, beyond self, can you know Me
as I AM, and then but as a feeling and a faith.

Yet I am here. Yet I hear. Yet I answer.
When you need ME, I am there.
Even if you deny Me, I am there.
Even when you feel most alone, I am there.
Even in your fears, I am there.
Even in your pain, I am there.

I am there when you pray and when you do not pray.
I am in you, and you are in Me.
Only in your mind can you feel separate from Me, for
only in your mind are the mists of "yours" and "mine".
Yet only with your mind can you know Me and experience Me.

Empty your heart of empty fears.
When you get yourself out of the way, I am there.
You can of yourself do nothing, but I can do all.
And I AM in all.

Though you may not see the good, good is there, for
I am there. I am there because I have to be, because I AM.

Only in Me does the world have meaning; only out of Me does the world take form; only because of ME does the world go forward.
I am the law on which the movement of the stars
and the growth of living cells are founded.

I am the love that is the law's fulfilling. I am assurance.
I am peace. I am oneness. I am the law that you can live by.
I am the love that you can cling to. I am your assurance.
I am your peace. I am ONE with you. I am.

Though you fail to find ME, I do not fail you.
Though your faith in Me is unsure, My faith in you never
wavers, because I know you, because I love you.

Beloved, I am there.

Does this sound faintly familiar? Written in 1947, James B. Irwin took it aboard Apollo 15. His mother had given it to him before the flight, and he actually left a copy of the poem on the moon.

Pretty amazing, huh?

"Daylight To Break" - Switchfoot

I've seen the darkest things
Crawling inside of me
I've seen the monsters come alive
I've seen the enemy
The nightmare follows me
Searching the darkness for a light

Waiting for daylight to break up this room
Waiting for daylight to break
I've been alone in the dark
I've been dreaming
Now I'm waking up without You
I've been waking up without You for too long

Back in the tragedy
I've made a mess of me
My bitter means, my bitter ends
I've seen the irony
It gets the best of me
Dying to be made new again

Waiting for daylight to break up this room
Waiting for daylight to break
I've been alone in the dark
I've been dreaming the day when dreamers are awake
The sun hits my eyes and everything is right
I've been waking up without You
I've been waking up without You
I've been waring alarms till You were in my arms
I've been waking without You
I've been waking up without You for too long

Waiting for to daylight to break up the room
Waiting, waiting
I've been alone in the dark
I've been dreaming the day when dreamers are awake
The sun hits my eyes and everything is right
I've been waking up without You
I've been waking up without You
Ive been waring alarms till You were in my arms
I've been waking up without You
I've been waking up without You for too long

1. Lower the drinking age? I once heard that it was 19 because it messes with the development of your brain cells or something. Check me if I'm wrong. But does it matter what the drinking age is? If someone wanted a drink that badly, I'm sure they will find a way.

Q: What website(s) do you visit the most during the day?
A:
I would like to say McMaster WebCT, but really it's Facebook >.>

A:
Too cold to feel.
Q: Do you own a camera phone?

Yes, but not because it has a camera. In fact, I don't even LIKE the camera, since the cameras on camera phones are bad quality. What I WOULD like is a real camera. But that is after I win the million dollars...

Trash-Talk

It all started with picking up the student paper while on my way back from class. I thought nothing of it, just stored it in my bag and went on my way. Forgot about it actually, until this afternoon, when I reached into my bag to get my pencil (for math notes) when I remembered the paper and started reading.

It was the sideline on the front page that caught my eye. "City To Vote On Garbage Bag Limit" it says. We already have a three bag limit, a difficult feat for a household of nine people, not to mention university students who hoard bottles, pizza boxes, and chinese take-out like it was 1935. And I include myself in this, because sometimes it's just nice to have someone else cook or store a beverage into a container for you, even if you have to pay for it.

So you can imagine my nervousness while reading that there was a vote to be taken that night (November 29th). So I raced to the local newspaper website and did a quick search in the archives. And SHOCK, HORROR, it got passed. Down to one bag. Effecting March 30th, 2008. I read this once. I read this twice. No change. I pass on the news and read it again. Still no change. What is this! On the bottom of the page I see a footnote. "Share your feedback at hallmarks.thespec.com. So, determined to voice my opinion on this rather messy subject (pun slightly intended), I went. It's a blog. And this is the first entry I read:

"November 30, 2007

I feel your pain...

Just got an email that made me laugh. You've likely read about council's confusion over their new garbage rules, imagine writing a school report about it.

my name is XXX and i attend saltfleet high school, grade 11.
For our geography independent study, our teacher assigned us to do seminars based on local environmental crisis. I chose to do the garbage bag limit. however, as I've been writing my report, I've noticed that everyday, the decision changes. I've been following up with the hamilton spectator, however I've had to change my report a couple times already based on the "confused" decisions. please help me. do you have advice for me? when should i date my project as it takes effect? 2009? 2010? my report is due Tuesday, December 4th. please write back.

thank you very much."

LOL. I suddenly love this blog and this student very much. But now I am in a confusion. When exactly IS this date? I did not read 2009 or 2010. I read 2008. Could I possibly have read the right one? Please no. Please. So I keep reading.

Clarity for council

Waste staff sent out a press release this afternoon explaining what council passed last night, despite the fact many councillors are still confused. Basically it will go from three to two to one bags by 2010. Residents will be given time to adjust to the one container limit.

Here's the low down written by the city:

March 31, 2008 through March 28, 2009

We will continue to collect up to 3 containers of garbage per household per week. Collection crews will take note of addresses with more than 1 garbage container at the curb so that we can follow-up with additional education in the form of a letter or a visit by customer service staff. Any additional container(s) above 3 will be tagged with Oops! stickers and left behind.

March 30, 2009 – April 3, 2010

We will collect 1 container of garbage and 1 clear garbage bag (provided that the clear bag does not contain acceptable blue box and / or green cart material(s)) per household per week. Collection crews will take note of addresses with more than 1 garbage container at the curb so that we can follow-up with additional education in the form of a letter or a visit by customer service staff. Any additional garbage container(s) above 1 (in an opaque bag or in a clear bag containing acceptable blue box and / or green cart material(s)) will be tagged with Oops! stickers and left behind.

April 5, 2010 – onward

We will collect 1 container of garbage per household per week. Collection crews will take note of addresses with more than 1 garbage container at the curb so that we can follow-up with additional education in the form of a letter or a visit by customer service staff. Addresses that are continually unable to and / or unwilling to comply (unless they have approval through the special consideration process) will be referred to By-Law and Enforcement for follow-up."

Clarity is a beautiful thing.

Humour is also quite wonderful. If you want a good laugh and to read what the heck happened, check this out: http://www.thespec.com/News/Local/article/289440. I'd copy and paste this too, but I've done that enough. And plus, it's just too funny!

The End Is Near...

Today marks the last day of classes... and also the closeness of exams. Less than a week until the four bang off in succession. Funny how time flies.

When I was looking in my old notes, I found a note that I had written on my first day of school. Here is a sample:

"35 minutes to class and I'm sitting here waiting, in some obscure corner of the the Togo Salmon Hall. Interesting place; there are fish randomly painted on the basement walls. It is said that 'Today is the first day of the rest of your life.' It might as well be the last, I am just as nervous. I know there's probably nothing to worry about. All the same, the wait is nervewracking. I'm trying to think of anything related to archaeology that I know. All i can think of is dinosaurs... Remember that crazy bag I bought at Walmart to sneak in food for the movies? Well I just glanced up and what do I see but someone walking by with the exact same one! Oh the memories... I am running on a pure adrenaline rush [from lack of sleep]. I would love to have stayed in bed, but then again I don't think I could go to sleep if I tried. Too excited and plus I have a medium iced cap keeping me company..."

It's funny looking back. Archaeology had turned out to be great; in fact, it was one of my favourite courses (which I then proceeded to drop). The classes weren't worth the worry at all.

How many times have we stressed ourselves out needlessly?
