Gerantology Studying? No, Another Quiz!

1. Do you tend to rip the paper off water bottles?

Go into the witness protection program. And then form my own mob.

Of course! How many chances will you get in your lifetime to take care of a monkey?

Nothing, thank goodness. Online advertising does nothing for me whatsoever, unless I accidentally click it, which then annoys me because it redirects me to a different page, making me against buying whatever I just clicked on.

Christmas!

7. When will you turn 18?
Already there, sucker!

8. If you were being chased by an alligator, what would you do?

Cory I think.

17. What is the WORST subject they teach at school?

Here's To The Long Weekend!

This past week has been a weird one for me.

With the midterm in Biology on Wednesday along with the return of the unfortunate cold I have been waking up and meaning to go to class but falling asleep again. As it turns out, I woke up this afternoon and realized that I completely took the week off of class, without really meaning to. Good thing this is a long weekend, because I have a lot of catching up to do!

So what's been keeping me busy you ask, if not for school? Lately I've been working on a large jigsaw puzzle. When I was unpacking earlier, I found a few bags of them so I decided to break one open and try my hand at it. Still no clue what picture it is but it's coming along, slowly but surely. Really I should be doing something more productive but it's 3 am and the only reason I'm up is to wait for a load of laundry to finish so I think I'm quite alright.

I think I mention this every time I post but man time flies. It seems like hardly any time passed since I first arrived, and here it is Thanksgiving once again. This is one of my favourite times of the year. A special holiday just to celebrate food, family, friends, and being grateful for what we're given; pretty sweet! What a great reminder each year of the things we should remember every day. Did I mention the fact that there's no school on Monday? Even better!

The Perfect Salmon Dish

At the local Fortinos earlier today there was a sale on salmon fillets. Now if you know me, you will know that my favourite fish has got to be the salmon and so I couldn't resist the urge to try to make some myself. But I had never made it before, so I asked the lady how to cook it in a pan and so here is her recipe, with some added stuff of my own.

Call it beginner's luck, but that salmon turned out so beautifully I'm pretty sure I have reached my full cooking potential and from this moment on it will all just go downhill from here. But let's hope not.

Needed:
2-3 cups rice
1 salmon fillet
1/2 cup (?) Famous BC Salmon Marinade & BBQ Sauce
3 stalks green onion, chopped
2 cups frozen mixed vegetables

1. In dish, coat salmon with sauce on both sides. Toss in green onions, cover (saran wrap will do) and marinate in fridge for 15-20 minutes. DO NOT LEAVE IN FOR MORE THAN 30! Apparently it makes the sauce go bad, sitting for too long.

2. Rinse the rice, bring to a boil, cover and leave on low heat.

[This would be a good time to get some things done, i.e. study or wash dishes. Personally I chose the latter]

3. Sprinkle water into a frying pan on low heat and slide in filet, skin side down. Cover and leave for 20 minutes, sprinkling more water occasionally.

4. 10 minutes after the fish, boil water in separate pot, throw in vegetables, bring to second boil, cover, and let sit until salmon is done.

Serve and Enjoy!

Accentuated Wonton Soup

Last night, out of regular groceries (the nearby store still seems so far away), I checked the freezer and, lo and behold, lay a package of some frozen premade wontons my dad had bought for me earlier. But to me normal wonton soup seems so... bland. So, the university student I am, I decided to spice it up using every bit of food left I had.

What I was left with was a quick and easy soup that was actually filling.

Needed:
1 package frozen premade wonton
3 potatoes, diced
2 cup (?) mixed frozen vegetables
1 package instant noodle

1. While boiling 2 separate pots of water, throw potatoes into small bowl, cover with water, and microwave for 5 minutes (cheating, but so much faster!). Drain.
2. In one pot, stir the package of instant noodle and potatoes. In the other, the vegetables and wontons. Turn heat down on the instant noodle and cover both for about 6 minutes, flipping the noodles halfway.
3. Drain the vegetables with wontons and stir into remaining pot.

Serve and enjoy!

The Joys Of Post-Secondary

Tomorrow is my first test in university. It is in Calculus, and worth 20% of the course. I am like every parent's worst nightmare: ever since I have gotten to university I've done nothing but slack off. Well tonight I decided that that was going to change. So I started tackling the one that I've done the least work in, Archaeology, and then turns out my printer doesn't work! After multiple tries and battling the very tempting prospect of literally smashing it to pieces (there is a handy dandy hammer right beside me right now...) I've given up and lost all hope in humanity. Just joking. Only in printers.

Flying By

It's already the end of the 19th, and then on to the last home stretch of September. Hard to believe how fast time goes. In exactly two weeks from today I will have my first midterm. In exactly two days I will have my first pop quiz. in 22 minutes it will be five minutes until tomorrow. See what I mean about how quickly time goes by?

Today I attempted for the first time today to make Hamburger Helper. I added my own little twist by cooking the hamburger with lots of onion (because hamburger just isn't the same without locking in onion juice) and put in real cheese, so it can actually have a little bit of non-process nutrients. The important thing is, the taste-testers, aka whoever else was hungry at the time, really enjoyed it. It's nice to know you've made a good meal. I think I would be perfectly content being a stay-at-home mom, cooking and cleaning. Some women think it's degrading to be just that but for some reason I enjoy that kind of stuff. But that's just me I guess haha.

One thing I have not been doing is washing dishes. I used to love it, but that was when I did it for other people. Now that I have to do it for myself, and I am pretty much the only one who does it, I am not liking it so much anymore. When all you want to do is cook and eat and you walk into the kitchen and there are a mountain of dishes you have to tackle, I can see where it gets tiring. But right now speaking of food is making me really hungry so I'm going to head to the kitchen for some good ol' instant noodle. It's like the staple midnight snack: quick, easy, pretty filling. And hot, for those cold wintery nights. Which haven't happened yet in Hamilton. It's September and everyone's still relying heavily on the fan. Whew.

Oh Take Me Back To The Start...

Have you ever gotten to a point where you feel like everything you do you're burying yourself deeper and deeper into a hole with no way out? For the past little while, it has been the story of my life. Like many things, it started with the small stuff. Which piled up and escalated into the big stuff. I'm at the point now where I no longer know what to do anymore. It's like I'm being pulled in so many different directions, and I don't know which is right. Like no matter how I go about doing whatever I do, it seems like I will hurt somebody. And that's the last thing I want. I guess a lot of it is because ever since I've gotten here, for some reason I've just gotten wrapped up and no longer spending much time (if any) in the Word. And as for actual prayer time, that's been non-existant too. Interesting how as soon as it stops, that's when things really start going downhill. Anyways enough brooding for tonight. I've got a recipe for clam chowder I want to make again. Being sick sucks; I skipped my first class today. It was math (big surprise). I spent the time taking a nap instead, and ended up being late for another class. It was kind of fun though, someone else in the house was late too and our buildings were close to each other so we ran together and I learned a new shortcut on the way. In gerantology we watched this video interviewing people in their 90's and their lives and stuff; it was really neat to see their perspective on things and also to see things you've never realized before. Such as how stereotyped they are and how they're always being put down because they're viewed as "too old". There was this one guy and he was like "I told my kids when I can no longer take care of myself, to either put me in a nursing home or a place for used cars. That's what happens when you get run down: you get discarded." It was really sad in some parts. But in others it was really funny. The same guy was talking about how he loves and appreciates his life so much more now. He's nearing 100 and goes to business meetings, reads the paper every day, drives, and lives on his own. His favourite thing to do is play cards, specifically solitaire. I saw him putting the cards down and immediately knew what it was; pretty cool.

The New Mix

Today was an... interesting day to say the least. Woke up and got ready an hour too early for class. Then went to class not knowing it was a tutorial and realized that we don't have one in archeology for three weeks. Went home, went to bed, then went to easy calc, which turned out to be a lot like grade 12 in that the prof went over the same stuff over and over again and in the same monotone voice. Then in psych met the T.A. who told us that we only have to show up for two classes in the week and that wasn't one of them. So got home early, made a balanced supper of potatoes, mix of frozen vegetables, and fried perogies (which is Polish by the way) and bummed around until going to the grocery store. We spent a surprisingly short two hours going through the aisles and picking out random stuff to eat, it was actually pretty fun. Came home, ate again, and we invented a mix of chocolate pudding and marshmallows, which wasn't that good but maybe it's just because it was no-name stuff. Anyways we turned up the stove to roast some marshmallows minus the chocolate, had a few fire incidents, and realized that I cannot do the math problems and so now I'm looking to switch math courses into something harder. Go figure.

So yeah, there's my day squished into one paragraph. Terribly exciting I know but such is life for the next six years I guess haha. Oh dear...

If He Can Do It...

"University 'Very Easy' For Hong Kong Nine-Year-Old"
- Yahoo! Canada News

HONG KONG (AFP) - Hong Kong's youngest ever university student said he was already bored with his "very easy" classes as he started his mathematics course on Tuesday.

The nine-year-old maths genius gained two grade As and a B in his A-levels in England -- normally taken by 18-year-olds.

March Boedihardjo told reporters gathered at Hong Kong Baptist University he was excited about starting school, but the classes were not stimulating.

"I've learned it a year or two years ago," Boedihardjo said as reporters peppered him with questions and cameras flashed around him.

The boy appeared impatient with the endless questions from reporters and kept asking his father when they could leave.

Boedihardjo did not have a good impression of his classmates either.

"They made no response (in classes). They just listened in the class and didn't interact with each other," he said.

The boy said that his old school friends "wanted to play", unlike the university students.

The university accepted Boedihardjo last month and has designed a special five-year course for him that will lead to a masters degree.

"Burn Out Bright" - Switchfoot

Does it have to start with a broken heart
Broken dreams and bleeding parts
We were young and world was clear
But young ambition disappears
I swore it would never come to this
The average, the obvious

I’m still discontented down here
I’m still discontented

If we’ve only got one try
If we’ve only got one life
If time was never on our side
Then before I die
I want to burn out bright

A spark ignites
In time and space
Limping through this human race
You bite and claw your way back home
But you’re running the wrong way

The future is a question mark
Of kerosene and electric sparks
There’s still fire in you yet
Yeah there’s still fire in you!

I keep cleaning up the mess I’ve made
I won’t run away
I can’t sleep in the bed I’ve made

These past few days have been nothing but crazy. On Wednesday I went to Oshawa to visit a good friend whom I haven't seen in a very long time. It was great; I got to ride on a double decker train, meet her family and boyfriend, and most of all see her again and have a good laugh about how little we have changed over the years.

On Friday I took a trip over to Toronto to visit my dad and brother. We went to Ikea and I finally got my bookcase, which I have yet to set up. It was good to see them again and eat some real home-cooked food but now I'm starting to get used to calling where I'm currently living as "home" so it's kind of nice to have a place to go back to that's your own. The room at least haha.

Last night I had heard that there was a meteor shower at 6am and so I convinced someone to stay up with me until then to watch it with me. After watching a movie and me accidentally falling asleep (oops) we went outside at 6 in the morning, only to find out that the sun had already risen. So we went back to bed, woke up 5 hours later, had breakfast, and then I went over to the university to pick up the Macpass. The stuff was alright. You got two t-shirts, an umbrella, a water bottle, two clipboards, a canvas bag to put it all in, and of course the bracelet (the actual macpass) to get you into all the frosh/welcome week stuff. Pretty cool, except that when you think that it costs $140, it was totally not worth it. Oh well, it's part of the "experience" right?

I'm starting to really like Hamilton. The Wendy's here have vanilla frosties (think DQ ice cream, except slightly more sugary and lighter) and there is this pho (pronounced fuh) vietnamese noodle place which is extremely cheap. The guys took me for a tour around campus, so I slightly know it better and it's cool. There's actually a lake somewhere nearby so later on tonight we're going back to check it out. I caught a toad crossing the road, which was pretty cool and unexpected. I mean out of nowhere hops this toad, right in front of us, heading towards a garden of flowers. It liked me though and stayed on my hand even though I kept trying to set him down, in the patch of flowers that he so desperately wanted to go to. Hehehe.

Then I took a bus to this really nice bubble tea place. Not nice as in fancy high quality nice but there were couches and we were pretty much the only ones there so like a very laid back casual atmosphere, and not too bad a price either. I've got to say it could quickly become one of my favourite places if I ever knew how to get back lol.

Anyways that's my day so far. School starts so soon! I'm like terrified, but from I hear it's not that bad. If you mess up there's always summer school, which is apparently how a lot of people raise their average and stuff, so that could be something I may have to take advantage of.

Well I'm going to go do something productive. Catch ya later!

Sunday Dinner

Coming back from church I was really hungry and needing something quick and easy. So armed with two pots, a bag of rice and a can of soup, I got down to work. Here is the recipe, for those that want to try it, and also for my own memory.

Start with the rice.
1. Rinse in pot until water runs clear
2. Fill pot with about twice as much water as rice
3. Sprinkle a tiny bit of salt and stir
4. Cover and bring to a rolling boil
5. Leave on low heat until water is absorbed and to desired tenderness

While the rice is absorbing, prepare the soup. I had bought a can big beef stew, which I think goes really well because it is thick and hearty. Plus it was on sale!
1. Empty can into pot
2. Heat on low until steam rises but not yet boiled

Combine rice and stew and ENJOY!

Surprise Sightseeing

Going to church this morning was an adventure. I had looked up Mountain View Christian Church on the internet and found the address and put that through the Hamilton Street Railway (but really just the bus system) website and wrote down the directions to and from starting at McMaster.

So I went over to the campus a little early so I could walk around a bit and explore. Except I explored a little too much and became lost and missed the bus I was supposed to catch. So I kept walking and eventually got to a street, saw a bus stop and sat down, hoping one may randomly drive by and go to the right place. Five minutes later, a bus came the next street over and the driver stopped and waved at me to get in and after talking turns out that it was lucky that I had gotten on that one because the other bus didn't come until 15 minutes later and would have to circle around and it would take a much longer time. The driver was really nice and showed me where to transfer and exactly which bus to go on, which I did. Someone had mentioned something about Limeridge being a mall so I waited until I got to the mall and got off, hoping that the church would be within sight. But the mall was a big one surrounded by different streets and so after walking around trying to find a map I started asking some people. Turns out Limeridge was also the name of a big street and I should've gotten off at a corner a while back. She suggested I called a taxi and so I did. Right after I hung up the taxi came, except it was to drop someone off and not mine so I kept waiting and he was nice and told me he would wait too to make sure that the taxi came. It never did so ten minutes later he gave me a ride to the corner I was supposed to have gotten off the bus at, except that there were no churches in sight and neither of us knew where Mountain View was. He pulled over, called his friend who I guess looked it up over the internet, and then we drove to the church, where upon getting out of the cab I met Elise's mom who led me into the church and it was cool. It's small but that makes it more personal and the people there are really nice. There was even someone else from Montague, PEI who is related to the Herrings! Funny how things work out :)

Coming back home again I walked through the campus and did some more exploring and it was great. I coaxed a big butterfly to crawl on my finger, befriended three squirrels and led them to an acorn tree, and touched a crazy looking plant I've never seen before.

All in all, so far it's been an amazing day. They say Hamilton is a hard city but I think it's pretty sweet.

On My Own

Waking up this morning was a great feeling. No parents, no adult supervision, no nothing. Not that it was a bad thing, but just that it's nice to be on your own you know? Hamilton is totally different than what I had expected. I had thought either it was going to be big like Toronto or small like Charlottetown. And really it is huge but more in the way of big long roads than stuff to do. Less than Charlottetown, believe it or not. I say that because there is no more car and apparently the nearest mall is a fairly long bus ride away. But there are lots of restaurants nearby. Think University Avenue, except on a longer scale. The weather here, which everyone is dying to know, is very hot and muggy. After just walking around for a bit yesterday I desperately needed a shower. Reminds me very much of Egypt except with the small houses of Scotland. Actually where I'm living (with a potential 9 other people) has sort of the feel of a hostel, except more private. And nicer, since right now there are only two others.

Dad and I went around the university yesterday; it is huge! 300 acres and home to 25 000 students, it is like a small city in itself. Beautiful campus though and there are dozens of canadian geese and big squirrels! The student centre is like a mall, which shops and everything. There is also a nuclear reactor which looks really cool. One day I think I will book an appointment to tour it so I can see what it's like.

Now for breakfast... bacon and eggs?

Stubborn As A Mule

Reading the yahoo.ca news this morning I came across an interesting article:

GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) - He rode his mule into town looking for work.

No, it wasn't the opening scene of a Western movie. It was what Rod Maday did last
week, ending a six-week odyssey from his hometown of Boy River, Minn.

"I've done about 1,500 miles and I've got the saddle sores to prove it," he said.

Maday said he lost his driver's license 10 years ago after he was accused in a hit-and-run, and was having a hard time finding work in Minnesota. He heard that Wyoming had plenty of jobs that paid well.

He set out with two mules. About a month ago, both mules got loose and one was hit
by a car. It had to be euthanized.

Maday arrived at the Department of Workforce Services office on Friday morning wearing a torn shirt, dusty blue jeans, spurs and a cowboy hat. Astride his brown and silver mule, Henry, he caused several double-takes.

He didn't stay long. He said some teenagers had yelled "uncalled for" things at him while he was riding into town the night before.

"Gillette's nothing like what I had thought," he said.

He left Saturday morning, riding west toward the Bighorn Mountains.

"I could probably get a job and stay here, but I'm not willing to part with my mule," Maday said. "He's my best friend and I'm not getting rid of him for nothing."

If I were an employer I would hire him on the spot just for having the determination and the guts to do something like that. Talk about dedication!

TV Time

I've been watching a lot of tv lately, but due to not having full cable during the day there are a lot of soaps and shows like Maury and stuff like that which has about the entertainment equivalent of a dead horse. There's no longer the shopping channel anymore, which was my previous method of escape haha. But even flicking through the channels you catch snippets of the stuff going on and it makes you wonder just what is going on in their minds. All the drama and complications people put themselves through... you wonder if they stop and ask themselves "why?" Why am I letting this person who is supposed to support me treat me like this? Why do I need to be in five or more different relationships at once? Why am I on national tv trying to solve out my problems in a crappy show like this? Anyways all this stuff reminded me of a song I've got stuck in my head lately which was relevant to a completely different show I saw, one of those older sitcoms. Now those I like!

She is gorgeous, smart, and funny
She smiles at you and you call her "hunny"
But she is her and I am me
She is everything I will never be

But I won't let it get me down
I refuse to be pushed around
I'm not changing who I am
Because I am part of God's perfect plan
And if she's the one that you're reaching for
Then it's time for me to walk out the door

She's the waitress that caught your eye
The pretty woman walking by
That girl on the movie screen
I'm sure you know just what I mean

So turn the channel, get back on base
Look at me and save some face
When you're staring at someone else
You know you're making a fool of yourself

But I won't let it get me down
I refuse to be pushed around
I'm not changing who I am
Because I am part of God's perfect plan
And if she's the one that you're reaching for
Then it's time for me to walk out the door

So make up your mind
We don't have much time
Am I going to be the only one you're dreaming of?
If you can't decide
Then sorry, goodbye
I was a fool for thinking that maybe it was love...

But I won't let it get me down
I refuse to be pushed around
I'm not changing who I am
Because I am part of God's perfect plan
And if she's the one that you're reaching for
Then it's time for me to walk out the door

I've done it before...

The Happenings

So now that I'm 18, I can buy lottery tickets, rent hotels, vote, and sign my own papers. Kind of weird actually, to now have to think of myself as an "adult". Today after church dad took us to High Park where there there was poop everywhere but huge geese and it was so cool. I almost touched one and would've if it hadn't run away at the last second. I guess it didn't help that I tried to run after it...

Yesterday for my birthday my brother and I went to see Bourne Ultimatum. Oh man it was so good. I wanted to hug the screen afterwards. The first two were good but this one takes the cake. I guess you don't expect it to be as good because it is the third one and usually they go down but no this one definitely rocks. If you have yet to see the first two I would suggest you do so and then haul your butt to the theatres to see the third. Worth every penny. Especially when you go to Rainbow Cinemas and an adult ticket on the weekend is still only $6. Talk about a nice change haha.

It's weird being here not "just to visit". Trying to think of this place as home again feels weird somehow. I guess it's just because I haven't really thought of it that way for a while now. My dad drove downtown for lunch after church today and I saw this group of big really nice buildings and I asked my brother what they were. He said it was the university. I'm regretting a little bit my stubborness to not go to U of T but oh well the pictures of McMaster are nice too.

I now can add to my list of things I own a computer desk, dish set, and a set of metal bowls and measuring cups. Went to Canadian Tire a few days ago and there was a sale on so we decided to get some stuff. Now all I need is an apartment which will hopefully be only two months away. For some reason my dad now thinks I will get murdered if I live by myself but honestly I think he just doesn't want to pay for it. But that's my dad for ya haha.

Anyways I'm going to go have a little nap. I was so tired last night I went to bed early and have no idea what I did with my glasses. So this morning I tore the place apart looking for them but couldn't find them so I went to church without it. I'm quite blind haha.

Finally Here.

After what seems like forever (even though the plane was on time! *shock*) I'm finally here in Toronto. It seems a little unreal to be moving up here; as I was talking to someone beside me on the plane we were talking about how nice PEI is and he said that Hamilton will be a big change. It's weird thinking I won't be back for at least a few months and only to visit. Even though I'm still "from away" PEI really is my home. After all I've lived there longer than I've lived anywhere else, consecutively or otherwise. And saying goodbye for a while is hard. But coming out of your comfort zone is how you grow and I know that this will all work out one way or another. Things have a way of doing that even when all seems impossible. Thank you God :) So I did a shocking thing when I came up here: I went to bed right when I arrived, which was around 9 pm. I guess I'm not really not used to having much sleep; I ended up waking up at 3:30 a.m. and have now been awake for a while. Woke my dad up by my meandering around and he stayed up with me for a little while but just went back to bed. A few nights of this and he will see how much I need my own apartment hopefully haha. Anyways we shall see.

Well I'm starving so I'm going to mosey on over to the kitchen and start raiding some food. Feel free to leave a comment or update your blog! :D

"It's On" by Superchick

It all comes down to this
You take your best shot, might miss
You take it anyway
You're gonna make your move today
Got the will, you'll find the way
To change the world someday
Grab this moment before it's gone

Today's your day

It's on (and on) it's on (and on) it's on (and on)
Today's your day so come on, bring it on
(And on) it's on (and on) it's on (and on)
Today's your day so come on, bring it on

And the view will never change
Unless you decide to change it
Don't feel like it today
Just show up anyways
And though life will take you down
It only matters if you let it
Get up, go through, press on

Today's your day

It's on (and on) it's on (and on) it's on (and on)
Today's your day so come on, bring it on
(And on) it's on (and on) it's on (and on)
Today's your day so come on, bring it on

And though you wanna quit
Don't think you can get through it
You've come too far to walk away
It's not gonna be today
And no matter how you feel
It's what you do that matters
This is your moment to be strong

Today's your day

It's on (and on) it's on (and on) it's on (and on)
Today's your day so come on bring it on
(And on) it's on (and on) it's on (and on)
Today's your day so come on, bring it on

No matter how you feel
It's what you do that matters
It's your moment to be strong

It's on (and on) it's on (and on) it's on (and on)
Today's your day so come on bring it on
(And on) it's on (and on) it's on (and on)
Today's your day so come on, bring it on!
